February 7, 2022 a thought for today, There is no knowledge without experience. Sicilian Proverb
This is another day that I am, along with others I’m sure, home bound. There is still ice on the roads and my car has still not been completely “deiced” yet. I figure it will be at least Wednesday or Thursday before I get out.
My first photo challenge for February 6 was “f is for....”. I chose fans, actually it is one fan with a reflection in the mirror over the mantel.
Bob was finally able to get out of the driveway and go to work this morning. I haven’t heard from him so I will have to wait to find out if he had any trouble getting to open roads. Most of the problem for us is getting out of our driveway then getting through streets that haven’t been cleared.
My second photo for yesterday was “orange”. I hadn’t been to the store recently so I didn’t have an orange (the fruit) or juice in the frig. So I chose the thing in my house that has the most orange color in it.....one set of the temperature blanket I am crocheting for the 2021/2022 year. This one if the summer blanket. (The autumn version is hiding under it)I will catch up on little things here and there that have been put on the back burner or overlooked. Right now, as we speak (smile), I am multitasking. The iRobot is running and the dishwasher is running. The dish washer had to be loaded and the iRobot needs emptied and cleaned every fifteen minutes of so...we have a lot of dog hair. This allows me time to work on some computer projects as work is going on around me.
The first photo theme for today is “g is for....”. My sister bought a globe for the twins to study and enjoy when they visit here so that was my choice of the letter g. I also like the angles and shapes in the background.
I got the bulletin template done this morning. I had sent the scheduled minister an email about needing her information but noticed a change when I rechecked my email a little later. Apparently the minister for this week has been replaced so now I will have to get the information from a different source.
The word today is positive. Correction does much, but encouragement does more. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Knowledge is power. Francis Bacon. Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. Thomas Jefferson. Unlimited power corrupts the possessor. William Pitt. Order is power. Henri Frederic Amiel. What it lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do. Aristotle. Circumstances are beyond human control, but our conduct is in our own power. Benjamin Disraeli. Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe. Voltaire. The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things. Henry Ward Beecher. To make no mistakes is not in the power of man; but from their errors and mistakes the wise and good learn wisdom for the future. Plutarch. Wondrous is the strength of cheerfulness, and its power of endurance - the cheerful man will do more in the same time, will do it; better, will preserve it longer, than the sad or sullen. Thomas Carlyle. There is a power in God's gospel beyond all description. Charles Spurgeon.
The second theme for today is “angles”. This is a neighbor’s house. I have always been attracted to the different angles, shapes and patterns in the architecture of this house so I chose it for my photo today. I wanted more emphasis to be on the features than on any color so I used Photoshop to change the color image to black and white and a pencil sketch filter.I like reading and believe it is the food for knowledge and wisdom. For me there are hidden and subtle leads or bases of truth and facts even in fiction and historical fiction. Some writers are more talented in the use of the English language and how to use it with the most description than others. Reading is fundamental to all growth in any and all kinds of thinking. So this article grabbed my attention. It’s my belief that genre doesn’t necessarily matter, there are messages in all stories that can lead or apply to most happenings in daily life. This article is a little more specific in its intent. The title is, “Young adults outpace others reading books, Decline seen among college graduates, seniors”. Four Ohio State classmate and friends in the twenty-one-year old age space, decided to start a book club. It is named the Hardcover Hotties Book Club. It all started at lunch one day when two of them decided they “shared a goal” to start reading more. One of them mentioned that her roommate had “inspired” her to start a GoodReads account. These three and a fourth who worked at a library joined together and formed the club. They began to meet at a bookstore/coffee shop on Parsons Avenue. They came up with the name for the club from a female rapper who calls her fans “hotties”. The club meets once a month to talk about a selection they had picked together for the month. There are now twenty people who come together in person and some out-of-state who join by zoom and participate on the club’s Instagram account. They want to “foster connection ... create a space to have a genuine discussion about things that matter”. Reading a book opens a “door” and can lead a discussion from something in the book to an everyday happening in ones life. A Gallup pole shows that the smallest group of adults since 1990 were reading an average of three fewer books per year in 2016, which includes e-books, audio books and all other hard copy. A decline in reading seems to be among college graduates, women and older Americans. New adult readers are helping the numbers in book readers, between 19 and 26, to grow and “are an interesting demographic” to keep an eye on. TikTok and #BookTok seem to be a pull on this age group encouraging an interest in reading. One of the members of the book club said it is “a way to be exposed to new ideas and space to discuss them in a world hungry to deeper connections....and being able to learn...”. It will be interesting to see how this increase in reading will affect the future!?
It’s going to be vegetable soup and grilled cheese for dinner.
Joy
Picnic?
