March 1, 2022 a thought for today, Who repairs not his gutter repairs his whole house. Romanian Proverb

I think maybe, just maybe, spring is trying to slide in slowly. The temperature is passable today and suppose to be even better by the end of the week.

The photo of the day for February 28 was “favorite word”. I have lots of favorites, family, love, friends and so on. But I picked the image that I like all the time, gourmet, snacks, party and on it goes. This shot is the Kroger store sign above the entrance to the store. I sectioned out the “Kroger .... Pharmacy” part of the sign, used the motion filter on it and used just the word “food”. The sign would have been very familiar until I played with it.

The meeting last night was productive. The only draw back to some meetings is that talk goes on and on about a subject that has been discussed over and over again within a space of a few minutes. In my opinion it causes the meetings to go longer than is necessary to not only serve its purpose and do the job it was meant to do and further not to do it without degrading its purpose.

The second photo challenge for yesterday was “f is for.....”. Food seemed to creep in again, just a happenstance, but after all it does begin with an “f”. There is an extra word beginning with “f” also, another favorite word, come to think of it,....free.

Today, after the virtual visits and a good start on the bulletin and finishing the Ash Wednesday bulletin, I took a break and went to see two of my great grandson’s and my granddaughter-in-law. It was a good visit for me. It’s always good to see the boys as they are growing and changing as life takes its path. They will be moving in a few months then I will have only two of my great grandchildren close by. I want to get my face time working on the ipad but I seem to be having a problem with my password that I can’t seem to get around it. I have a face time type visit with two of the kids but I don’t know if I will be able to get it to work the other four. I will work out something ‘cause I don’t want to lose even the tiniest contact with them. The September years don’t leave a lot of time for dragging of feet.

The first photo challenge for the first day of the new month is “the weather”. As I was heading over to my granddaughter-in-law’s I caught sight of the snow pile that was left from the last shoveling of that parking lot. The pile along with the cleared pavement pretty much shows the weather here right now.

I need to get to the church in the morning to get the Ash Wednesday bulletin printed and placed

The word today is reason. Reason is God's crowning gift to man. Sophocles. The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing. Blaise Pascal. The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore. Vincent Van Gogh. Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe. Voltaire. If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins. Benjamin Franklin.  Trust your instinct to the end, though you can render no reason. Ralph Waldo Emerson. The last function of reason is to recognize that there are an infinity of things which surpass it, Blaise Pascal. He who establishes his argument by noise and command shows that his reason is weak. Michel de Montaigne. We are born weak, we need strength; helpless, we need aid; foolish, we need reason. All that we lack at birth, all that we need when we come to man's estate, is the gift of education. Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Most men seem to live according to sense rather than reason. Thomas Aquinas.  Prejudices are what fools use for reason. Voltaire

The second photo for today is “a gate no fence”. I have seen this gate many time. A few years ago it was a wrought iron ornamental gate but has changed to this well-aged wooden structure now. The thing that actually drew my attention all those years ago when it was all ornamental and now this wooden one was the block wall it is mounted on. It is located in an alley behind some businesses and  residential back yards.

This article is yet more history about Columbus. This one is a little more about the first state house and its problems. In the opening paragraph the story was about the fact that Columbus had a 210-year birthday on February 14. With no town on the “high banks opposite Franklinton at the forks of the Scioto” until 1812, the General Assembly took on a surveyor to lay out the streets and public spaces which then led to a plan for a statehouse. It was then they planed space for the state house and a penitentiary. The size and proportions were laid out. The statehouse was planned for 75 feet by 50 feet to be built of brick on a stone foundation. It would be modern architecture with “elegance, convenience, strength and durability” applied. All worked out except the “strength and durability” aspect. The penitentiary was finished in 183 and the statehouse was proceeding with the use of clay from a Native American mound at Mound and High streets. The two story building had a steeple and bell tower. There was a balcony with two sides with “railed walks”. In further description of the architecture was a vestibule with flights of stairs to the right and left leading to a gallery and Senate Chamber. Next door to the new statehouse was a 2-story state office building. Later the US courthouse was built nearby. In the 1830s it was decided that the state house needed to be larger. It took more than 20 years to complete. During that period of time there were delays. In the early 1850s the walls were up but there was still concern about when it would be finished. On February 1 of 1852 the old statehouse caught fire that has started near the bell and cupola and parts of the building were falling. Much of the art and papers were rescued. Some of the bricks from the old statehouse were saved and used in the new building. The new statehouse was dedicated during a visit by President Abraham Lincoln.

I think it’s going to be fried bologna and soup for dinner.
