February 9, 2024 a thought for today, The fire you kindle for your enemy often burns yourself more than him. Chinese Proverb

My first upload for yesterday was “nightscape”. I’m not normally out and about at night so I went to my archives for this image. It is a corner in downtown Columbus.

The next upload for yesterday was “starts with the letter M”. This is one of
the “M” I see the most and this is an outstanding size and visual for that letter.

The third upload for yesterday is “food”. This is one my my favorite life things to consider.....food. I was planning on making the lemon pudding cake so I stopped at the store on my way home to get the items I need. That turned out to be my props.

Life today. There are no major deadlines on this day in particular so I can move in a relaxed way. I did get a start on the newsletter. And I baked a cake, that’s a big one in my life now. I don’t do much cooking let alone baking since there was a change in my life. This cake was an easy on. I saw it on Facebook. It looked so delicious and so easy to make I had to try it. One box of angel food cake mix and 22 oz. of lemon pudding, mix and bake. It’s going to be way to much for Sue and me so some of it will be frozen.

I did some updating on the church online calendar also today. Along with that I uploaded a photo and message to Instagram and Facebook.

The first image of the day upload for today is “starts with the letter B”. I was using the food from yesterday’s visit to the store and my photo prop for that day. As I was mixing the ingredients I decided that I would use the mixing bowl as my prop for today’s image.

I got making Sweet Pea’s meatballs made yesterday. I use a can of pumpkin in the mix. Pumpkin is suppose to be good for the digestion. As I was laying out the ingredients I discovered that I hadn’t replaced the can of pumpkin I used the last time. I did have a small jar of babyfood pumpkin that I put in but that isn’t nearly the same amount as a can of pumpkin. I have the baby food on hand for when she is experiencing one of her digestive events. She has had that problem since we got her, probably since she was born. Actually that’s how she got her name, but that’s a long and messy story.

Two of my photos for today had to come from my archives. One was for an old barn.....I’m not out and about in the countryside today. The other was for frosty....the sun is bright and the temp is spring like today so no “frosty” outside.

The second image upload for today is “an old barn”. I have several barn photos in my archives. Since I am in the city for today I used one of those images for my upload today.

The word today is accident.  There is no such thing as accident; it is fate misnamed. Napoleon Bonaparte.  I never did anything worth doing by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work. Plato.  What you are, you are by accident of birth; what I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a thousand princes; there is only one Beethoven. Ludwig van Beethoven.  Fame is a vapor; popularity an accident; riches take wings, Horace Greeley. He that would be a great man must learn to turn every accident to some advantage. Francois de La Rochefoucauld.  At first laying down, as a fact fundamental, That nothing with God can be accidental. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  Accidents will occur in the best regulated families. Charles Dickens.  By the accident of fortune a man may rule the world for a time, but by virtue of love and kindness he may rule the world forever. Laozi.  Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by the accidents of time, or place, or circumstances, are brought into closer connection with you. Saint Augustine.  Did you ever observe to whom the accidents happen? Chance favors only the prepared mind. Louis Pasteur.  The ideal man bears the accidents of life with dignity and grace, making the best of circumstances. Aristotle.

The last upload for today is “frosty”. I had to go to my archives again for this one. It is sunny and relatively warm today, not conducive to forsty. I could have used the inside to the chest freezer but I thought this one is a little more interesting.

This article comes from one of my favorite sites where professors write articles of note on history, science, society and nature. This one covers a well known habit of humans when it comes to Valentines Day. I worked in a flower shop for several years so I am familiar with this story. “Americans spend millions of dollars on Valentine’s Day roses”. This one was written by an Associate Professor of Markets, Public Policy and Law. He states that this holiday “traditionally combines romance with big business.” In 1989 about 1 billion roses were sold in the US. By 2023 that number had risne to “roughly 2.8 billion.” According to the article it is estimated that $2.6 will be spent on Valentine’s Day flowers. Further it states that 250 million roses are produced for this holiday. One thing that stopped me in the article was this statment some roses may be “tied to the war on illegal drugs” probably because of where they come from. Roses use to be “homegrown” but now are “mainly imported from South America.” In 1970 US farms andnurseries grew and sold cut roses selling about half a billion roses annually. That method has “withered away”. In 2023 2.8 billion cut roses were imported from Colombia and Ecuador”. The article when on toe explan that the “shift” from home grown rose to imported ones started “when the U.S. and Colombian governments were looking for new ways to stem the flow of cocaine into the U.S.” The strategy was to try to get farmers in Colombia to stop “growing coca leaves” which, the article said, are the raw ingredient for making cocaine. In getting them to grow something else. In the 1900s “Colombia and Ecuador signed the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act”. The “act” gave them “duty-free access to U.S. markets in exchange for clamping down on growing illegal drugs”. Apparently, accodring to the article, “whether the act stopped drug production is unclear, but many businesses in Colombia and Ecuador started growing and shipping flowers north”. The price of roses seemed to have decreased for most of the year but during Valenciennes Day the price doubles. The artricle explained that the rise occurs “around Valentine’s Day as all parts of the supply chain, from growers to wholesalers to retailers, are stressed during the buying surge”.

Pizza for dinner.
