May 1, 2024, a thought for today, Overdoing is doing nothing to the purpose. Latin Proverb
My first upload for the last day of April 2024 was “rainbow”. I think there was only one other time in my life that I had camera in hand at the very right time to capture a fleeting rainbow.
The last upload for April was “round”. There are many round objects lying around but this one caught my interest for this “assignment”.
Life today. It seems to be another “laid back” day here at my house. I am “working” at a pace that is comfortable and happily productive. Having the bulletin and the lyric’s sheet done on the first day of the week made today all that much freer. I finished preparing the envelopes and one of the birthday cards for this week.
My first upload for the first day of May 2024 is “May flower(s)”. Snowballs blooming and still some of the Lenten Rose. I found this peony just about to bloom so I cut it, brought it in and put it in warm water. Then I gently coaxed some of the petals to open so that I could get the photo today instead of tomorrow when it would be fully open.I am getting my lawn “beautified”. Brian came a little while ago. He is very particular about his own work. He seems like wherever he is working as far as lawn care goes, is property he wants to enjoy knowing that he made it look that way when every thing is done and looks nice and neat. Like all human beings he has gifts special to him as we are all given. There are a few less than prefect habits in all but then .....(same for all of us) . The two of us get what we expect from one another.
We are having a gorgeous spring day. We had some rain over night but the sun is out today. It isn’t on hot side just the perfect temperature.
The next upload for today is “tripod”. I don’t where I put my standard tripod. This one is the ones’ I more often use anyway. It is bendable, small and travels well. If I need to, I can find a tree limb or railing of some sort to twist it around with my camera (or cell phone) attached when I need to make an image with the camera/phone completely still.
The word today is debt. What can be added to the happiness of a man who is in health, out of debt, and has a clear conscience? Adam Smith. A man in debt is so far a slave. Ralph Waldo Emerson. A national debt, if it is not excessive, will be to us a national blessing. Alexander Hamilton. There is scarcely anything that drags a person down like debt. P. T. Barnum. Science does not know its debt to imagination. Ralph Waldo Emerson. It shows nobility to be willing to increase your debt to a man to whom you already owe much. Marcus Tullius Cicero. Creditors have better memories than debtors. Benjamin Franklin. It is said that the world is in a state of bankruptcy, that the world owes the world more than the world can pay. Ralph Waldo Emerson. The second vice is lying, the first is running in debt. Benjamin Franklin. Youth is in danger until it learns to look upon debts as furies. Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton. Many delight more in giving of presents than in paying their debts. Philip Sidney. I hold every man a debtor to his profession. Francis Bacon. He looks the whole world in the face for he owes not any man. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A small debt produces a debtor; a large one, an enemy. Publilius Syrus. I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well. Alexander the Great. There is no cholera, no yellow-fever, no small-pox, more contagious than debt. Anthony Trollope.
The last photo of the day is “my favourite place”. As with most of my “favorites” they vary from time to time and mood and so on. One of my favorites is my lounge chair in the evening, another is my bed for night time reading and sleeping of course. This one is my front porch. There are many memories on this porch and in the swings that have graced it over the years. The wind chime on the left in the photo is to the memory of my son Bob.
Article: I only read the header before I chose this subject....it sounded interesting. That title is: “the power of touch is vital for both reading and writing”. It was written by a Professor Emeriti of Linguistics. The story opened with “Pat the Bunny,” the 1940 classic touch-and-feel book, is still in print – a testament to the value of touch in introducing infants and toddlers to the world of reading”. It went further in this line as when children come to school and start learning the alphabet they learn it by “using hands-on manipulation, such as forming letters out of clay”. But this method has since been pretty much neglected “to the students’ detriment”. The professor went on to write that reading assignments are now “heavily digital” and keyboards are the writing tool. The writer of this article believes that “writing supports thinking”. There was a study where 500 secondary students were exposed to reading print versus digital text. There was a corresponding study of students and adults that were asked to express their likes and dislikes about handwriting versus typing. One of the results was that the majority of those tested continue to value touch “in the written word”. One of the questions they wanted to observe was about the feeling of holding a book or “writing instruments” in their hands and how it mattered. One of the answers was “I like feeling the paper and pen under my hands, being able to physically form words.” Another of the answers was about the “interaction of touch and movement”. Related to that is the feel of the page as it is turned and the “feel” the words in the writing motions. The participants in the both of the studies noted the “cognitive benefits” as focus, concentration, immersion or memory were important.” Another response was being more personally connected in the physical reading and writing. On the other side of the coin is the access to the internet through computer “reading” and “greater speed” in the writing through technology. Coming toward the end of the article the ideas that were found were that “touch is an effective way to build early reading and writing skills, as well as to support how more developed readers and writers interact with the written word”. The physical touch method of reading and writing seem to show higher comprehension in reading print versus digital. I believe that in the early stages of learning to read and write these ideas are vitally important. However, as the effects of these practices take hold new technology can be, if used properly, just as important for it’s own values.
I am having baked salmon steak for dinner.
