December 6, 2022 a thought for today, Misfortune is not that which can be avoided, but that which cannot. Chinese Proverb

An upload for December 5 was called “something red”. I don’t have a lot of “red” in the house so  I looked around and caught sight of this Christmas tin full of cookies (at the time....not now) that was give to us last Christmas. Perfect for the upload and perfect for the season.

This day has been full of detours, good ones but a little distracting. There were a few minor changes to the bulletin. One was a request after the whole piece was completed, a request for a last minute addition for altar flowers which meant some delicate moving around of other items already placed to make it fit. Another was a phone call from a very dear friend of mine and the church about an item he wants put in the church newsletter.

A second upload for the 5th was called “D is for....”. I have a few of these lying around the house so it seemed perfect for the “D”. It is one of my own crochet doilies.

Then another phone call from a cousin I haven’t seen in years.... brought back memories of our teen years. After that a trip out side to pick up meds for myself and Sweet Pea. Then a clean up of the sink and clearing out of the frig. All in all, kind of like the Mad Hatter - “ I'm Late, I'm Late, for a very important date, No time to say hello, goodbye...”

A third upload for yesterday was “get your game on board or table game”. Somehow all of the board games we had around the house disappeared a few years ago. I was able to find this one in the kids toy box that we keep around for any visiting young people. The youngest ones really like this one when the shapes fall as the timer runs down.

The word today is support. He stands erect by bending over the fallen. He rises by lifting others, Robert Green. It is not enough to help the feeble up, but to support him after, William Shakespeare.  Doing nothing for others is the undoing of ourselves, Horace Mann.  No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another, Charles Dickens. The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just. Abraham Lincoln.  It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. Thomas Jefferson.  I have seen great intolerance shown in support of tolerance. Samuel Taylor Coleridge.  A little flattery will support a man through great fatigue. James Monroe.  Without publicity there can be no public support, and without public support every nation must decay. Benjamin Disraeli.  Patience is the support of weakness; impatience the ruin of strength. Charles Caleb Colton.

Yesterday’s uploads included one called “peace”. I had a copy of the church bulletin I put together for last Sunday. It was the second Sunday of Advent.

Tommy’s Diner has been a kind of hang out for some us and for me from some years back. It sticks in my mind that the building may have been used by an acquaintance that I worked with over sixty years ago who was also in the restaurant business. I saw this article and it brought this all back to mind. When I worked at the Federal Courts several years ago some of my peers and I would go there for our lunch when we had the transportation available. The restaurant is called Tommy’s Diner now and has been there since 1989. The article relates that it has become a “Columbus Landmark”. It is located in the Franklinton area of Columbus, one of the areas in the Columbus community experiencing new growth and renewal. The owner is a Greek immigrant who came to this country as a young man. He and his wife have two sons who are also in the culinary business. They say that “food is a celebration of life. It can unite people”. The menu is a “combination of  traditional diner fare, home-cooked specialties and innovative cuisine highlighted daily.” The atmosphere and setting is accompanied with many photos of moments in time passed and items bringing a feel of old style hominess.  It is less than a mile from downtown businesses in Columbus as well as several businesses around it not to mention the growth of  Franklinton in its revitalization.

Another upload for today is “mood”. I think this photo of my family shows the mood of the season with everyone sitting around on another and packages all over the place.

It’s pigs in a blanket and mashed potato pancakes in the air fryer for dinner tonight.
