September 28, 2024 a thought for today, The deeper the sorrow the less tongue it hath. Traditional Proverb

One of the uploads for yesterday was “relax”. This is a selfie from my archives. As I was searching the archives for ideas I came across this one and thought it fit the challenge perfectly.

The next upload for yesterday is another in my series of “minimalist”. This autumn leaf on the black top coasting of the parking lot at the laboratory office.

The last upload for yesterday was “a store shelf”. I hadn’t planned on going to the store on the 27th so I searched the archives and found this image from a past visit.

Life today. We are finally getting some rain. Last night we got spells of it with a vengeance of wind blasts and the falling rain. I was concerned that some of my special wind chimes would be broken or blown away. They are located on hooks from the roof of the porch. They would be hard to reach to take down in a storm. This morning when I checked they were all intact. There didn’t seem to be any lightening and thunder with the storm, so Sweet Pea wasn’t too upset with it. The temperatures dropped so much that I turned the furnace on for an hour to warm things up a little. When we start getting a big weather change there is almost no other news on the major local channels except for the weather reporters repeating the conditions over and over and over again for hours....I guess it’s their time to shine.

Sue, Sweet Pea and I did the Saturday grocery pick up with a stop at White Castle, McDonalds was too busy....too long a wait. Then we made a quick look out for the photos for today. I still have a few things to put away.

The first upload for today is “a collage of photos”. These are some of the floral images stored in my archives. I brought them together as a bouquet.

Lowell and Rebecca got home sometime during the night. When I spoke to him a little while ago I had to mention the leak that has developed in the basement. I think it is from the powder room. I hated to mention a problem like that as they are just getting home from their trip.

Tami and Andy stopped by while we were picking up groceries. I hate to miss my family when they come to visit.

I think the rest of the day will just be a catch up here and there.

The next photo is “a fountain”. There is only one fountain to my recollection close by my daily living space. Here it is ..... the park near my house.

The word today is master.  A man who is a master of patience is master of everything else. George Savil.  A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent. John Calvin.  Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master. Leonardo da Vinci.  The nation which can prefer disgrace to danger is prepared for a master and deserves one. Alexander Hamilton.  One can be the master of what one does, but never of what one feels. Gustave Flaubert. Money is in some respects life's fire: it is a very excellent servant, but a terrible master. P. T. Barnum.  The mind wears the colors of the soul, as a valet those of his master. Sophie Swetchine.  We can't have full knowledge all at once. We must start by believing; then afterwards we may be led on to master the evidence for ourselves. Thomas Aquinas.  The eye of the master will do more work than both his hands. Benjamin Franklin.  No man is good enough to be another's master. William Morris.  Master books, but do not let them master you. Read to live, not live to read. Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton.  Nature is the master of talents; genius is the master of nature. Josiah Gilbert Holland. Art, as far as it is able, follows nature, as a pupil imitates his master; thus your art must be, as it were, God's grandchild. Dante Alighieri.  It is in self-limitation that a master first shows himself. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.  As long as a word remains unspoken, you are its master; once you utter it, you are its slave. Solomon Ibn Gabirol.

The last photo challenge for today is “a neon sign at night”.  This is on a store in a near by shopping mall.

Article: To me, babies, young children and animals are the true and complete definition and essence of purity. The first part of the title to this article renewed this belief. There is a bit of a twist as the article comes to an end and mentions the AI practices that are blooming in our society and how they may relate to this subject. The title: Babies and animals can’t tell us if they have consciousness – but philosophers and scientists are starting to find answers”. It starts out relaying that infants and pet and other animals can’t express themselves in ways that most can’t understand. In talking about the adult outlook on the subject it goes on to say that “Some philosophers and scientists think that awake, attentive adults might be conscious of much more than can be put into words” and “because of these issues, academics, both in science and philosophy, have recently developed new ways of measuring consciousness”. One of their method of leaning about the “consciousness” of babies and animals they are “looking at the brains and behavior of adults when they’re conscious of something, and using this to make a list of all of the behavior and brain patterns.....that aren’t there when we aren’t conscious of it”.There is belief that these “patterns” may be alike in infants and that it grows as the child grows. One of the scientists in the study feels that there are other “markers” that work in infants like the “ability to pay attention to adults actions...then imitate that action later”. The study part referring to the same activities in animals mentions a difference challenge. There is evidence that animals experience pain and try to tend to a small injury on their own and also “avoid locations where they have had unpleasant experiences”. The article mentioned that these “questions are especially pressing, since they have consequences for our treatment of animals”. There are thoughts that there is a “link between an animal’s sensory perception of something, and its more high-level cognitive abilities”. These studies have led to the “question of whether AI systems, including robots, could be conscious”. Then they are running into some deeper thinking about AI systems.  One side of the thinking is that “robots cannot be conscious because they do not have biological brains”. The other side considers what “if AI systems like robots become sufficiently similar to biological creatures, then we should say that they are conscious”.

Left overs for dinner.

September 26, 2024 a thought for the day, The first step toward greatness is to be honest. Traditional Proverb

The first photo challenge upload for yesterday was “a rooftop”. As Sweet Pea and I were waiting for Sue. We took a short walk, short due to the distance my legs allow.  This is one of the things we saw in our walk. It is a roof over the entrance to the building.

The next upload for yesterday was also taken on that short walk. The title to the challenge was “peace in nature”. This “set” of trees and their particular spacing and shape along with the blue sky background was a strong sense of peace for me at that moment.

This upload for yesterday was in my series of “minimalist” image, a single item with little background scatter. I’m not sure of the purpose of this particular tower, some kind of communication I imaging.

Life today. Food panty this month was full of bits of surprises, all turned out to be just hiccups and after the fact kind of amusing. It adds spice to my life, hopefully some of the other volunteers lives too. I’ve been with this pantry for more than twenty years. I have gained so much, some unbelievably warming and lighting up my life. It also brings with it all sorts of knowledge adding to the growth of wisdom.

Today was very quiet at church. Patti is on vacation. The group meeting that use to be there every week day at 8:30 has moves to a new location. So there was absolutely no one in the church, which made a beautiful time in the sanctuary for me as I passed through with the bulletin. I got both the bulletin and the newsletter printing done in excellent time.

The first upload for today is another in the  “minimalist” series. We have a gorgeous church inside and out. There are fascinating things gracing its total architecture besides the obvious Presence. So I try to snap photos when I can of the down-to-earth-everyday-objects to share. Some of the things that can promote thought and often a smile. The next image upload is taken in the same place.

As I was getting out of my car to go into the church, I dropped my house keys between the car seat and the middle console. I spent a few minutes looking to no avail and went on in to do my work. I checked to try to get them when I came out....still no luck. I stopped at the post office. Then to McDonalds. Once I got home, I checked again with the flash light on my cell phone. I saw them. I stretched and reached them....success.

Sue had some more paper work on the car to take care of today. Since I don’t drive too far from the west side and since I had the printing to do at work, she had Tami take her. Andy went along for the ride. I got to see Tami for a few minutes. She brought the can up from the curb for me.

I had time to make the meat balls for Sweet Pea and then start the laundry. I nearly forgot the laundry but finally got stated a couple of hours later than I would normally have.

This second image upload for today is “bookshelf”. There are a lot of interesting and some very old books in this library. It also serves as a meeting room and most recently as one of the Sunday School class rooms.

The word today is many. Success is sweet and sweeter if long delayed and gotten through many struggles and defeats. Amos Bronson Alcott.  Many a man curses the rain that falls upon his head, and knows not that it brings abundance to drive away the hunger. Saint Basil.  However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them? Buddha. 'The time has come,' the walrus said, 'to talk of many things: of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings.' Lewis Carroll.  Prosperity is not without many fears and distastes; adversity not without many comforts and hopes. Francis Bacon.  There are many truths of which the full meaning cannot be realized until personal experience has brought it home. John Stuart Mill.  There's a great power in words, if you don't hitch too many of them together. Josh Billings.  Many admire, few know. Hippocrates.  Accustom yourself continually to make many acts of love, for they enkindle and melt the soul. Saint Teresa of Avila.  Avoid popularity; it has many snares, and no real benefit. William Penn.  Many believe - and I believe - that I have been designated for this work by God. In spite of my old age, I do not want to give it up; I work out of love for God and I put all my hope in Him. Michelangelo.  Our country may be likened to a new house. We lack many things, but we possess the most precious of all - liberty! James Monroe. A man lives by believing something: not by debating and arguing about many things. Thomas Carlyle.  There are many victories worse than a defeat. George Eliot. Knowledge may give weight, but accomplishments give lustre, and many more people see than weigh. Herodotus.

The last challenge upload for today is “childhood”. This is an elementary school in our neighborhood. It is not the school I attended but my children did. It seems to need a bit of a touch up but it served its purpose then and seems to be doing well now too.

Article: Halloween and the harvest season are at our door step. This article is about some of the fun that accompanies this season of the year. “Pumpkins, Hay rides, and S’mores: The Ultimate Fall Fest Is Happening at Slate Run”. The free festivities will happen October 12 from 11 to 3. There will be the corn maze and “leisurely” hay rides. Along with that fun there will be archery, a pumpkin patch, crafts and games. The article mentioned that along with all the festivities there will be music and live performances. The snacks and sweets will be s’mores! Other foods will be available from food trucks. Slate Run is one of the interesting parks in the Columbus Metro Park system. There are 1,700 acres of “diverse landscapes”. One of the things that make it an “interesting” park is that it allows families to experience “life as it was in the 1880s”. Another thing that the visit at the festival may include might be a hike on the provided trails.

Some thing from the freezer for dinner.

September 24, 2024 a thought for today, When we think to catch we are sometimes caught. Spanish Proverb

The first upload for yesterday was “a old photo”. This is my mother and father many, many years ago. And yes, I did personally take this photo. I was into photography all those years ago and am still mesmerized with it.

My second photo challenge upload is in my “minimalist” series. This is one of the inside doors in my vets office. I made this photograph as I was waiting for our appointment.

The third image for the 24th was “autumn”. This one is an easy shot to right now. The color of autumn is beautiful.

Life today. Yesterday proved to be a little out of the ordinary. It began, after my “virtual” visits to news and such, with a visit to the vet. It was time for Sweet Pea’s annual check. The appointment including the waiting, was over after an hour. It ended with four medication in four medications injections as well as a blood draw. I got a report back from the blood draw this morning that she may be in the early stages of kidney disease. So we are going to have to adjust her diet. I contacted my granddaughter who is a veterinary nurse for some suggestions. She gave me three to choose from. They all sounded good. I also checked how much protein is in the foods that I am feeding her. I was surprised to see that the ground chicken had more protein that the ground beef. Adding to the check up was refills two of her four medications. The ending bill was not inexpensive to say the lest. But she is family and more on the healthy side for her age than not.

The day, yesterday, went on surprisingly smoothly. I got the newsletter done up to the photo page. That will come Wednesday morning.

Today I got the bulletin done and sent out for proofing. I did the research on Sweet Peas meds after the vet called. Then I called my eye doctor about a problem getting my dry eye meds. All before I got ready for food pantry.

My first photo challenge upload for today is in my “minimalist” series. This is a rose on a black sheet in my home right now.

People who cheat at the expense of others “gets my dander up”. She, a person in my life today, took a number then went outside the building. In doing our job we called numbers in order. When we got to 27 there was no answer, 27 again after ten or fifteen minutes and two clients, and again another fifteen or twenty minutes and several other customer sign-ins. Finally she came in and registered expecting to be called next since 27 had already been passed. She didn’t think she would have to wait until number 37 where she would have been had she been honest and responsible.....sorry....letting off steam.

I took the three photo uploads on my way home and used the darkroom to get ready for upload. In the mean time. Sweet Pea got out of the yard. I had to walk half a block to catch her and bring her home. I didn’t have the collar and leash with me so I had to use the cord that was in the waist band of my slacks.

I think I am almost done for the day. Well, pay bills and cook dinner and clean up.

The next upload for today is “craving”. I am a foodie in general and when I am out and about fast food does the trick. Gourmet food isn’t a bad choice either.

The word today is manner.  In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  I think that is a better thing than thanksgiving: thanks-living. How is this to be done? By a general cheerfulness of manner, by an obedience to the command of Him by whose mercy we live, by a perpetual, constant delighting of ourselves in the Lord, and by a submission of our desires to His will. Charles Spurgeon.  Everything that exists is in a manner the seed of that which will be. Marcus Aurelius.  As a blind man has no idea of colors, so have we no idea of the manner by which the all-wise God perceives and understands all things. Isaac Newton. We ought to esteem it of the greatest importance that the fictions which children first hear should be adapted in the most perfect manner to the promotion of virtue. Plato.  A man cannot make a pair of shoes rightly unless he do it in a devout manner. Thomas Carlyle.  A man's own manner and character is what most becomes him. Marcus Tullius Cicero.  Let your enemies be disarmed by the gentleness of your manner, but at the same time let them feel, the steadiness of your resentment. Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield.

The last photo in the challenge series’ for today is “a car interior”. This is mine. Sweet Pea had left one of her favorite toys in the car. I was hoping to include it but I couldn’t find it. I think it was under the front seat.

Article: The title to this article looks like an interesting concept to explore and share. Here’s the title that caught my eye “Mixed emotions – neuroscience is exploring how your brain lets you experience two opposite feelings at once. The first part of the article used parents dropping their kids off at college as prompting a “whirlwind of feelings: the heartache of parting, sadness over a permanently changed family dynamic, the uncertainty of what lies ahead – but also the pride of seeing your child move toward independence”. The story tells that scientists say emotions are “states of the brain and body that motivate you toward or away from things”. Emotions are labeled either positive or negative. Science has determined on the one hand that “if emotions are biological, you can’t experience opposites in the same moment”. Further on they suggest that it that is so “you must instead be flipping back and forth”. So now to “untangle” the mixed emotions. One determination was that “disgusted and amused reactions are indeed occurring simultaneously to create something new”. In further testing of that theory it was determined that “the brain states ..................(that is) not a unique pattern for a new mixed emotion”. In more studies they feel that there is “missing important information about how activity changes or stays the same second-to-second”.  It was interesting to read that “kids do not begin to understand or report mixed emotions until later in childhood”. This phenomenon seems to develop as the brain matures. “Sometimes, mixed emotions help you cope with big changes and turn into cherished memories”. In some cases when the event leads to a “source of distress” it “doesn’t mean all the positive feelings you have about them automatically go away”. From what I gather from this article mixed emotions are a real thing and aren’t going to go away easily and that “better understanding of mixed emotions” may make these mixtures “become cherished memories that help them grow”. I can’t determine that finding the reasons for the mixed emotions will change life’s travels. I think they are important to growth and wisdom.

Maybe taco salad for dinner.

September 22, 2024 a thought for today, A man stands taller when he stoops for a child. Traditional Proverb

An upload for yesterday was “play time”. I reached for this one. The younger generations aren’t around here much any more so I went to the archives. This is an image of the twins on the side at the local park.

The next upload is “country road with fall leaves”. There is a story about this one. I don’t like using too much touch up on photos as a rule. That is why I am hesitant about AI. Here’s the story, I am a city girl, no country roads close by. There is, however, a “lane” behind the shopping mall that is lined with some trees and no curb. With Sue and Sweet Pea I headed for that site to get the photo. We almost got there when I spied six fire trucks with hoses operating. I believe it was a training day due to the drought effects on the grass. Anyway, I couldn’t get close for the shot. This one is my street. The only Photoshop I used was taking out four cars and covering the curb with leaves under the curb.

The last upload for yesterday was “dirty”. I could have made a shot of the cracked earth under some dried patches of grass. Instead I used one of my great grandsons as he was enjoying his “smash cake”. That requires no clothes except for a diaper and a shower as quick as possible.

Life today. Yesterday we had a surprise visit from Tami and Andy. It was great to see Andy up and about after his back surgery.

I also had a phone call from Lowell later in the day. That made a perfect day for me, hearing from both of my kids.

It’s been a pretty typical Sunday. Church was nice. We were having a “return to church” Sunday. There was an invitation out for some who haven’t been here for a while, maybe do to moving or other events, to come for a visit today. We had a special fellowship time to honor the event. The results could have been a little better but the fellowship was comfortable and a spiritual “hug”.

The first photo challenge upload for today is “something you enjoy doing or seeing (other that photography)”. For me it is my collection of my house plants.

I had most of my photo shots for the day before I left for church and the letter was started ahead of my leaving also. When I got home, I visited the darkroom (Photoshop) then finished the letter. That will be the todo list for today.

The weather is wonderful. There is a decent temperature of about 82 degrees. There is still no rain on the horizon but soon maybe.

Tomorrow is Sweet Peas annual check up with blood work, vaccinations and refills on medications. It should be on the costly side of the finances. But she’s family and her health is good for her age, we want to keep it that way.

The second photo a day upload for today is “autumn”. What better than fallen leaves for that challenge.

The word today is majority. A man with God is always in the majority. John Knox.  It is unnatural for a majority to rule, for a majority can seldom be organized and united for specific action, and a minority can. Jean-Jacques Rousseau.  If you are cast in a different mould to the majority, it is no merit of yours: Nature did it. Charlotte Bronte.  In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme. Aristotle.  In a republic this rule ought to be observed: that the majority should not have the predominant power. Marcus Tullius Cicero.  Neither current events nor history show that the majority rule, or ever did rule. Jefferson Davis.  One is a majority if he is right. Abraham Lincoln.  Shall we then judge a country by the majority, or by the minority? By the minority, surely. Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable. Thomas Jefferson.  A minority is powerless while it conforms to the majority. Henry David Thoreau.  A man in the right, with God on his side, is in the majority, though he be alone, for God is multitudinous above all populations of the earth. Henry Ward Beecher.  History shows that the majority of people that have done anything great have passed their youth in seclusion. Thomas Carlyle.  Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people. Giordano Bruno. It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men. Samuel Adams.

The last upload for today is “a national flag”. There are several here. Sue has a wreath on the front entry door with eight flags mounted in it. These is also my neighbor’s flag a couple of houses away.

Article: Weather has been a top of the list of discussions for most of this summer. Here is one side of the story for this area of the country. I try not to second guess the creator of nature. Could there be a message in this season? The article title is “Now there’s nothing’, Drought is one of the worst in state history”. At the beginning of the article a farmer’s wife was interviewed, she says that on the 60-acre property their trees in the past “have produced so much fruit that they were “literally giving bushels of apples away to people last year.” Now th applies are “shriveling on the tree”. There is also a 17-acre wetland on the property. She says it was used to “filter for runoff from conventional farms on three sides, has been dry for about a month”. The article went on to mention that Columbus “released” water from one of the reservoirs in September. One of the affected farmers reported that he had used an “off stream storage” that helped for a while. There has been “ongoing partnerships with Columbus to share some of the municipal backup water supplies”. There was “a burn ban (issued on) Sept. 6 for much of southeastern Ohio”. According to the article that a “demand is expected to decrease as fall begins and people stop watering lawns regularly”. Some “water that is getting released from the off-stream storage reservoirs”. Some of the interviewed say that if “we get a wet winter and a wet spring, and everything fills back up.” There is a long term plan for “boosting water supply for a growing population and increasing the resiliency of the systems”. Also there are plans to have “two more off-stream reservoirs will be built nearby within the next decade”. Further in the article it is mentioned that “the state is also expected to be hotter....... we can expect future droughts to also be more extreme”. My own question is would more trees help in some way, hold moisture in or shade to cut down on heat?

Hamburgers and cheesy potatoes for dinner.

September 20, 2024 a thought for today, A person who has a right to boast doesn't have to. Traditional Proverb

My first photo challenge and upload for yesterday was “wild flowers” .  I am not sure they are truly wild flowers. There has been some infrastructure projects going on in our area for the last several months. One major part was rain gardens as well as other “blueprint” project for the Hilltop/Westgate area. This is a result of one of the rain gardens at Westgate Park.

The fist upload for yesterday was in my “black and white” series. This is one view of part of a shopping small as seen through the safety poles and trees.

The next and last upload for yesterday is “transportation”. My first thought for transportation was a city bus. I had to drive around for a bit to catch a bus passing by. In this image I caught the bus and a truck as transportation as well as the bicycle rack on the front of the bus to suggest another form of transportation.

Life today. This Friday is the end to a busy week. This one seems like a bit of a “vacation” for some reason. I haven’t done much other than working on my letter to you and the daily photo assignments.  Sweet Pea and I went in search of a couple of the photos.

In sharing myself with you, I have discovered about myself that I rely on Proverbs (the Biblical Proverbs) along with the Lords Prayer as well as historical proverbs. I believe strongly that Jesus taught in the form of proverbs so that His people would use their power of thought to reach and make decisions through the knowledge, reason and acquired wisdom that comes with thought. Proverbs can be a guide to that end.

My first upload for today is “architectural detail”. This is a section of my church. I think the church is built on something like gothic-style architecture. It is gorgeous and often sought out for wedding venues.

Tami and Andy gave us a gift certificate to Doordash for Christmas. I am finally getting around to checking it out. Fridays may become our “Doordash” night to replace pizza. I had to figure out how to set up an account and register the gift card. Then the procedure of our first order. It was relatively easy, just a little time consuming.

This next upload for today is in my “black and white” series. This is the last in this particular series. It was shot in front of my house.

The weather hasn’t taken a “lasting” change to autumn yet. We are having heat during the day with evening/night temps turning to cool. The leaves are gradually falling but not to the point of raking or mulching yet. This is the perfect season I think with early spring being next best. On realities side all seasons offer their different pleasures as well as a few moments of surprise.

The next upload although not in my black and white series it was from another of my photo groups suggesting “a flower in black and white”.  The flowers in what is left of any gardens I have now are gone for the season. This one is from my neighbor’s yard. They have gorgeous flowers all season long. This is one of the benefits of living in such a warm and friendly neighborhood.

The word for today is nothing. There is nothing impossible to him who will try. Alexander the Great.  Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength. Saint Francis de Sales.  Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence. Leonardo da Vinci.  All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason. Immanuel Kant.  Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Ralph Waldo Emerson. Nothing great is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig. I answer you that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen. Epictetus.  The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing. Blaise Pascal.  Nothing happens to any man that he is not formed by nature to bear. Marcus Aurelius.  To be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it. Confucius.  The golden moments in the stream of life rush past us, and we see nothing but sand; the angels come to visit us, and we only know them when they are gone. George Eliot.  Nothing is more terrible than to see ignorance in action. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.  Nothing's beautiful from every point of view. Horace.  Doing nothing for others is the undoing of ourselves. Horace Mann.  Oh while I live, to be the ruler of life, not a slave, to meet life as a powerful conqueror, and nothing exterior to me will ever take command of me. Walt Whitman.  There is nothing so easy but that it becomes difficult when you do it reluctantly. Pythagoras.  I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the heart's affections, and the truth of imagination. John Keats.

This is another of the days of the month that I have a fourth photo a day upload. This challenge is “apple”. I happen to have two on hand.

Article: This is a story of more about Franklinton as well as the subject of art. The title is about an event in the art field that has become a tradition in Franklinton. It is: “Scrawl Goes Back To Its Roots For the 18th Year”. (A forward from one Google search on the importance of art: Art has the power to move people and evoke emotions that words can never do justice to......art truly has the potential to shape our world....conversations about pressing issues such as poverty, war, racism, and gender inequality to inspiring economic developments with its powerful visuals; art does indeed have far-reaching implications on how the modern world functions today.) This event is a live painting mural festival. There are over 50 artists that paint murals as you watch. It is said to traditionally become a “fun and festive atmosphere” over the period of a weekend. This event, called Scrawl, was one thing that helped create the arts community in Franklinton. Much of the art is meant to “remind the city what Franklinton is all about”. It also gives artists one of their chances to perform their art live. Some of the artists are or have been students at CCAD (Columbus College of Art and Design). On September 13 there was a neighborhood-wide stroll for people who would like to stop at neighborhood food and bar businesses in the Franklinton area. There was an “after party”, 9 to midnight, at Land Grant Brewing where “finished murals from Scrawl” were “on view and available for purchase with all proceeds benefiting the Franklinton Arts District.”

Instead of pizza night we are going to try Doordash for a change.

September 18, 2024 a thought for today, A questioning man is halfway to being wise. Traditional Proverb

The first challenge photo upload for yesterday was “memory”. Wow, what a subject. One that popped into my head was one of my memories from long, long ago. I remember the sliding boards. This one is a little different than the ones from my memories but I don’t know of any from all that time ago that are still around. These are plexiglass or something of that nature. Ours were metal of some kind. I think there were more and “serious” bumps and a longer distance along the glide from top to bottom.

The next upload is one of my series of “black and white”. As I was driving thru the shopping mall I saw several closed and abandoned shops. This is one of them.

The last upload for yesterday was “bubbles”. First I filled a bowl with a dollop of Dawn soap and water. I shot several photos of it but wasn’t satisfied with any of them so I dumped the water in the sink while I tried to think of a better idea. As the water went down the drain I saw the bubbles all around the opening. Some even reflected some color.....great shot.

Life today. Here is another food pantry day as was yesterday. Yesterday was a surprise to all of us. We had about a quarter the number of guests as we have been having. Maybe today will be a catch up day or maybe next week will be busier.

Before I left, I tried making the ice cream made with ripe bananas. I put it in the freezer so it would be ready for a taste test later. I am anxious to taste it after dinner.

...I’m back from this days food pantry. We were still not up to the numbers we have had in the past few months but it was up from yesterday.

The first upload for today is one in my series of “black and white”. This is of one of my church’s stained glass windows. I made several shots of some of the other windows and decided on this one for it’s particular and varied shades of grey. This window represents the translations of the bible....Our window shows three men of a translating committee. Following an old artistic tradition, the three represent the three ages of men: young, middle-aged and elderly, meaning that the Bible applies to all men.

I was going to stop at McDonalds for “lunch”. As I was about to make my turn, I noticed that there was a car heading out in the in space. So I needed to make a quick change in heavy traffic. There is and has been for several months some kind of infrastructure change/maintenance going on in that area of Broad Street. It continues for about a mile or more with traffic and business interruptions. I’m sure in the long run when it is done it will all be worth it (??) At this point it is disrupting two fast food spots, a veterinary office and an auto supply business and more on down the road.

We are now having chilly mornings and hot afternoons. A week ago I had the furnace on for an hour in the mornings. Now the AC is back on but not “running” all the time. The grass in the yards in this neighborhood is like straw. It would take a lot of rain to bring back the green.

This upload is “a colourful mural”. My sister and I disagree about graffiti and street art. She doesn’t like any of it. I like some of it....the ones that show true artistic ability. As far as the term in the assignment “mural” I don’t know if that would include street art....I believe it does when the artist has a strong talent. (Def. of street art-a form of artwork that is displayed in public on surrounding buildings, on streets, trains and other publicly viewed surfaces. Def of mural- an artistic painting, illustration or decoration, which is applied to the wall of a building and which is not, or not intended to be, graffiti

The word today is note. Love, hope, fear, faith - these make humanity; These are its sign and note and character. Robert Browning.  Forward, as occasion offers. Never look round to see whether any shall note it... Be satisfied with success in even the smallest matter, and think that even such a result is no trifle. Marcus Aurelius.  I can forgive, but I cannot forget, is only another way of saying, I will not forgive. Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note - torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one. Henry Ward Beecher. Note too that a faithful study of the liberal arts humanizes character and permits it not to be cruel. Ovid.  In every phenomenon the beginning remains always the most notable moment. Thomas Carlyle.  Tones sound, and roar and storm about me until I have set them down in notes. Ludwig van Beethoven.  In different hours, a man represents each of several of his ancestors, as if there were seven or eight of us rolled up in each man's skin, - seven or eight ancestors at least, and they constitute the variety of notes for that new piece of music which his life is. Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Seek not to know who said this or that, but take note of what has been said. Thomas a Kempis.  What is to reach the heart must come from above; if it does not come from thence, it will be nothing but notes, body without spirit. Ludwig van Beethoven.  All of one's life is music, if one touches the notes rightly, and in time. John Ruskin.  When I take up a book I have read before, I know what to expect; the satisfaction is not lessened by being anticipated. I shake hands with, and look our old tried and valued friend in the face,--compare notes and chat the hour away. William Hazlitt.

My last upload for today is “unexpected”. This could be a difficult one to vision in an image. Maybe it  could be an accident or spillage of some sort or a surprise party. I chose to show an unexpected arrangement of cords and cables. It’s really not expected where there is technical equipment involved.

Article: I haven’t come to terms with manipulating nature but maybe I need some more study on it. Maybe that is a sign in all instances to give the subject more thought and study. This article is about “Plants getting ....Genetically modified varieties are coming out of the lab and into homes and gardens”. It started out mentioning how many plants have thistles and thorns that would be better received without them. Really? My way of thinking they are there and were “Created” with and for a purpose. The article went on further to relate that “plants and other organisms evolve naturally over time”. That part I am agreement with because nature is taking care of that. Then is mentions the fact that “plant breeders have taken advantage of these variations to create high-yielding crop varieties”. It pointed out that in 1983 golden rice was generated “to combat vitamin A deficiency”. More recently there has been something called “gene editing using a technique known as CRISPR has made it possible to modify plant traits more easily and quickly” which was likened to being “akin to adding or removing a sentence here or there”. (What would ‘adding or removing a sentence” do to our knowledge and understanding?) In using this kind of technique in “eggplants, we got rid of prickles in a desert-adapted wild plant species with edible raisin-like fruits”.  Something similar was used to yield “a rose without thorns”. Another part of this manipulating “what is to what can be”....“permanently transfer genes from one species to another, using recombinant DNA technology to yield what scientists call a transgenic organism”.  They say that people can grow purple tomatoes that have been “genetically engineered to contain pigment-producing genes from the snapdragon plant, resulting in antioxidant-rich tomatoes with a dark purple hue”.  The article mentions how there are “risks and rewards” to these manipulations for example some “unforeseen ecological consequences”and “new or more vigilant consumer protection laws”. I agree that these techniques can be life savers as far as curing diseases and illnesses but other wise I still need some convening. If and when necessary to my life I will expand my knowledge.

I think dinner will be straight from the freezer.

September 16, 2024 a thought for today, Pearls around the neck, stones upon the heart. Jewish Proverb

My first challenge for yesterday was “a fence”. You know, when you look around there all kinds of fences. This one could be a fun one.....I may use is as a series one of these days.

The next upload for yesterday was “shallow depth of field”. I used my lucky
bamboo plant as a model and the portrait feature on the Samsung 24+ to help with the DOF.

The next upload for yesterday was “shadows”. I have several in the archives but wanted use one that was shot more currently so I picked this one of the outdoor chairs on the back deck.

The last upload for yesterday, which was another of the days I needed a fourth
image upload. This challenge is titled “complementary colors”. I used one of the shots I took today of the stained glass windows. All of the colors are hard to miss. I chose to use a blur filter to put the colors forward more than the subject of the window.

Life today. It’s been the typical Monday with getting a start on the bulletin. This Monday had just a bit of a difference from the majority of my Mondays, the cleaning lady was here. She comes once a month to do the part of the cleaning that has become a little more of a problem than it use to be for me. After she left I had to go out in search of the photos for today’s challenges.

While Nancy was here I worked on a photo collage for the Sunday School classes lesson yesterday. A while back we had a bit of a problem with our web domain name. That bumped us out of our Instagram account until we renewed it. So I had to go though some hoops to get us back on line before I could to the upload. Now we are happily back on line and the lesson photos and descriptions are up.

The first challenge upload for today is “a bathtub”. This challenge title is one that seems elementary to me. But what the heck. I am sure there could be some really fancy and artful ones. Mine is a little on the “everyday” kind.

We are having another gorgeous day. It started out cool but is warming up quickly. I think this coming week is the official beginning of autumn. More leaves are beginning to show their colors.

This is the first week of pantry for the month. Sue still has a couple of places to go for more work on getting out from under the quandaries connected with owning a car. I will take her to handle some of that before food pantry.

Andy is getting better from the back surgery as it takes a good bit of time to get “back to normal”. Lowell has some projects going on too. So it looks like I will have a little less time with both Tami and Lowell for a few days.

The second upload for today is “a statue”. I found in this search that there are not to many “statues” in my area. This one caught my fancy. It looks like a cocker spaniel with her puppy.

The word for today is none. A friend to all is a friend to none. Aristotle.  Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. Tecumseh.  None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm. Henry David Thoreau.  The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. Johann Sebastian Bach.  None are so empty as those who are full of themselves. Benjamin Whichcote. 'You are no saint,' says the devil. Well, if I am not, I am a sinner, and Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. Sink or swim, I go to Him; other hope, I have none. Charles Spurgeon. The greatest of faults, I should say, is to be conscious of none. Thomas Carlyle. All men profess honesty as long as they can. To believe all men honest would be folly. To believe none so is something worse. John Quincy Adams. None can love freedom heartily, but good men; the rest love not freedom, but licence. John Milton.  In politics the middle way is none at all. John Adams.  He that respects himself is safe from others. He wears a coat of mail that none can pierce. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  The beggar wears all colors fearing none. Charles Lamb.  Truth is handsomer than the affectation of love. Your goodness must have some edge to it, else it is none. Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Please all, and you will please none. Aesop.  Every religion is good that teaches man to be good; and I know of none that instructs him to be bad. Thomas Paine.  Toleration is good for all, or it is good for none. Edmund Burke.

This last upload for today starts my series of “black and white”. This is at my nearby metro park. I like black and white photos. It may be a generational thing for me.

Article. I am glad when a historical building can find new life rather than being torn down to make room for something more “modern.” This article is about the “revival” of the Holy Rosary Church on Mains Street. The hope is to turn the church building into a “desirable, diverse area”.  The hopes are that the “historic church can anchor the redevelopment of one of the longtime commercial corridors on Columbus’ East Side”. They hope to turn the church into an “event and performance space while keeping it available for religious services on Sunday mornings”. In 2022 the church was bought and about “$450,000" was spent in repairing and “tightening” the building in anticipation of redeveloping it”. In 1916 there was an Italianate style bell tower added to the building. The property also includes an adjacent farmhouse from the 1840s that served as the church’s rectory”. The plan is to possibly turn it into an inn. The church was originally closed in the 1970s. Another church bought it and use it for 16 years. Then it “fell into disrepair”. In “2018 (it) was placed on Columbus Landmarks’ Most Endangered Buildings list”.  The company planning on making these changes has bought other properties adjacent to these and plans several renovations in the process of building up the neighborhood. The plans are for covert buildings into commercial space and a restaurant. There is a partnering going on with a company working in the Franklinton area. There are hopes that this area will be populated with cafes, art galleries, coffee shops , restaurants and retail. There was an interview with someone in the area who said they will believe it when they see it.

It’s going to be hot dog (coney’s) and mac and cheese for dinner.

Joy
