January 4, 2025 a thought for today, As the water level sinks the stones are exposed. Chinese Proverb
The first upload for yesterday was “macro”. This is my newest air plant. I thought one of the first one I had had been lost so I ordered a new one....this is it.
Life today. Things seem to be beginning to blend back into a “normal” flow. By “normal” I mean daily activities and times are fitting back like a puzzle. I still have a few small “left-over” holiday tasks to close. The tree needs to be put away. I have a couple of calendars to mail. I have a couple of small crochet projects that I had planned to use but didn’t get them finished in time. I want to finish them and give them with a different plan. I need to get back to an ‘art’ project I was using with my great grandchildren that I put on hold when the holiday activities took over .
Sweet Pea and I picked up the groceries. It amazes me the way the girls who bring my groceries to the car have sweat shirts on rather than heavy coats in this weather ..... I tell them I worry about them doing that ..... they tell me they are plenty warm as they move about so much.
In my short travels I am getting more and more use to and attached to the car. I have purchased a couple of car cushions to, I have hopes, “soften” travel on the less than smooth pavement on West Broad Street. My Toyota seemed to handle it in a little smoother ride. Lowell tells me it is most likely because this a more “compact” model car. I had thought maybe the air pressure in the tires lessened a little may make it smoother.
The first upload for today is “breakfast”. I don’t always eat a full breakfast so I picked this one from my archives when I was having a very hungry morning. After I get the photos and this letter uploaded I am going to make Waldorf Salad using my mother’s recipe. I asked her for it many times but don’t remember her giving it to me. The other day when I was looking for some recipes for Jessie I found it! The thing is she only listed the ingredients, not the amounts. My dad use to cook also, that was his method of cooking too, no definite measurements to pass on. It was just a pinch of this and a pinch of that. They had made the dishes so many times no measurements were necessary.
Ok, it’s time to get to other Saturday things.
The second upload today is “my choice” which today is one of my series of partials. I not only like the hint of the bicycle that was left unattended, I also like the lines in the background. The word today is remains. That though the radiance which was once so bright be now forever taken from my sight. Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind. William Wordsworth. I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done. Buddha. The feeling remains that God is on the journey, too. Saint Teresa of Avila. All we know is still infinitely less than all that remains unknown. William Harvey. Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted from your good ones. Benjamin Franklin. In misfortune, which friend remains a friend? Euripides. Things of this world are in so constant a flux, that nothing remains long in the same state. John Locke. Everything in creation has its appointed painter or poet and remains in bondage like the princess in the fairy tale 'til its appropriate liberator comes to set it free. Ralph Waldo Emerson. The accent of one's birthplace remains in the mind and in the heart as in one's speech. Francois de La Rochefoucauld. As long as a word remains unspoken, you are its master; once you utter it, you are its slave. Solomon Ibn Gabirol. In every phenomenon the beginning remains always the most notable moment. Thomas Carlyle.
The last upload for today is “black and white”. I feel that some black and white images offers more of a story than one of the same in color. In this article we may learn some more about earlier humans that were in our state and some of the things they left behind. The title is The story of Ohio’s ancient Native complex and its long journey for recognition as a World Heritage site. There are eight Hopewell Ceremonial Eathworks in Ohio that received a place on the “UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites on Sept. 19, 2023.” These sites were “built between the beginning of the common era and the 12th century”. It is saie they are “indigenous marvels” in science and astronomy by the Native Americans in this area. Newark has approximately 2,000-year-ole series of geometric enclosures. This is the largest series in the world. The native nations lost control of their sites as a result of the “Indian Remo”val Act of 1830". Most “Native nations” lost their original homes over time. Settlers took many of them in the early years. In losing their land they lost control of their “sacred heritages”. As for the Newark Earthworks and Serpent Mound, the story goes that “over the years, Newark became a military barracks, a fairground, and for the past century it has been leased to the Moundbuilders Country Club”. As the for story of the mounds in general “some Americans continue to promote false theories about the mounds, casting doubt on the genius of Indigenous science”. One person involved in trying to protect the mounds says “the most skillful engineer of the day” would not be able to replicate the accurate dimensions of these mounds”. In the 19th century he “Serpent Mound was partially destroyed by farmers”. In the “20th century, two private, nonprofit corporations, Friends of Serpent Mound and Arc of Appalachia, started to manage the site”. In another instance the “the fight to protect the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks represents more than 25 years of hard work”. The Ohio State University, Newark campus – and the Ohio History Connection to protect and research the mounds”. In 2020 the “Ohio History Connection, which took over management of Serpent Mound”. So efforts go on to protect this part of our history.
